Food and mood! What’s the ideal breakfast?

Buongiorno! As a typical Italian, I grew up eating exactly what you can see in this picture which was captured when I was in Venice last year. While it is nice to make exceptions and sometimes change things up, this is not the best foods to support your #mood. After a long time fasting overnight, there is nothing more unsuggested than feeding yourself with sugary food and caffeine. During the night, while we sleep, our blood sugar reaches a very low point. The same happens after we eat certain foods like sugar, white refined carbs and caffeine.

These foods provide a quick blood sugar high leading to a slump quickly after and this can create a vicious circle, as your body craves for more of those foods as it is trying to fix the crash.


So, having a sweet #breakfast topped up by caffeine is something you really want to avoid. As mentioned above, during the night your blood sugar reaches a very low point and therefore, introducing sugar, refined carbs or caffeine will give it rapid spike before crashing again soon after.


So, what could you eat to keep these blood sugar levels stable and therefore support your mood?

Basically, you want to introduce protein to your morning meal together with some complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Eat good quality carbs such as:


1. Wholemeal bread, oat porridge or oatcakes together with: 2. Some protein such as smoked salmon, eggs, chicken (if you are not vegan) or alternatively, you can have beans or add some protein powder to your smoothies for example, or spread tahini or hummus onto your bread. Also add, when possible; 3. Healthy fats such as avocado and nuts.


Having breakfast in this way will keep you full for longer, whilst stabilising your blood sugar levels and keeping a constant supply of energy! Your brain will love it and your mood will pick up straight away!
